HDFC Regalia
HDFC · Premium · Visa/MC
India's most popular premium card — but only worth it if you travel or use SmartBuy.
HDFC Regalia looks average on paper at 1.33% cashback. But that number is misleading. The real value is hidden in SmartBuy, where travel bookings earn up to 13.33%, and partner brands earn 3.33%. If you book even 2-3 flights a year through SmartBuy, the rewards easily outpace cards with higher base rates.
The 18 lounge visits per year (12 domestic + 6 international) are worth ₹15,000-20,000 alone if you travel regularly. The ₹2,500 annual fee is waivable at ₹4 lakh spend — roughly ₹33,000/month, which is achievable for most premium card holders. For non-travelers, though, 1.33% flat is mediocre.
Frequent travelers who book through SmartBuy, or anyone spending ₹4L+/year who values lounge access. If you fly 3+ times a year domestically, the lounge visits alone justify the fee.
You rarely travel and don't use SmartBuy. At 1.33% base, you'd earn more with an Axis ACE (1.5% uncapped) or HDFC Millennia (5% on partners) for everyday spending.
Reward Rates by Category
This is where most people get confused. Regalia earns 4 points per ₹150 spent. But those points have two very different values:
Cashback redemption: 1 point = ₹0.20 → effective rate 1.33%. This is what most people experience.
Travel via SmartBuy: 1 point = ₹0.50 → effective rate 3.33%. This is the intended use case. Book flights or hotels through HDFC SmartBuy and your effective rate jumps to 3.33% base, with 10x accelerators pushing it to 13.33%.
The monthly cap of 50,000 points (worth ₹10,000 in cashback or ₹25,000 in travel) requires ₹18.75 lakh in monthly spend to hit — virtually impossible for individuals. So the cap is effectively irrelevant.
4 points/₹150 · 1pt = ₹0.20 cashback or ₹0.50 travel
Rate shown (1.33%) assumes cashback at ₹0.20/point. Travel redemption via SmartBuy = ₹0.50/point (3.33% base). SmartBuy flights/hotels can reach 13.33%.

These rates apply when using specific platforms or partners — higher than the base category rate shown above.

Is HDFC Regalia worth the ₹2,500 annual fee?+
Yes, if you travel 2+ times a year. The 18 lounge visits alone are worth ₹15K+. The fee is waivable at ₹4L annual spend (₹33K/month). If you don't travel, there are better options.
How do I maximize Regalia rewards?+
Always book travel through HDFC SmartBuy for 10x points (up to 13.33%). For non-travel, use partner brands (Myntra, Nykaa) for 5x points. Never redeem points as cashback — travel redemption gives 2.5x more value.
HDFC Regalia vs Infinia — which is better?+
Infinia is objectively better (3.33% vs 1.33% base, unlimited lounge) but it's invite-only and costs ₹12,500. If you can get Infinia, get it. If not, Regalia is the best accessible HDFC premium card.
Does Regalia earn points on rent payments?+
Yes, but only if processed as a normal transaction. Rent paid via third-party platforms may not earn points depending on the MCC code.
Can I use Regalia lounge access for guests?+
Guest access depends on the specific lounge program (Priority Pass, Visa, domestic). Generally, you can bring 1 guest per visit but the guest visit counts toward your annual limit.
